FRAMINGHAM - I am Leora Mallach and I am running to represent District 7 on City Council.
Growing up in a civically minded family, along with many fascinating dinner table conversations about the local political landscape, I have vivid memories of holding signs for our PA congressman as far back as 3rd grade. Most of my family is politically engaged, and my sister currently serves on her town select board while she is deployed overseas with the VT National Guard. I believe deeply in grassroots organizing, where ordinary people come together to effect positive change. As a professional experiential educator and entrepreneur, I bring together disparate voices and communities around shared projects and values to strengthen the community.
Framingham has been my home for four years and I am running for City Council because I believe that civic engagement strengthens our community.
A self-described lover of democracy, I believe in the power of the people. I am a link in generations of engaged citizens and activists and invite you to join me.
As I deepen my roots in Framingham, I am excited about new ideas and innovations to move us forward. After ten years of living in Jamaica Plain, I was looking to own property and move to a location convenient to the commuter rail and greater Boston at large. I was attracted to Framingham because of its ethnic, economic and environmental diversity and affordability. I value community and initiated meeting my neighbors quickly; hosting a block party after 4 months.
For two years I have been on the Agricultural Advisory Committee and I am a member worker at Stearns Farm. My little free library and front yard pollinator gardens are intentional ways I create space for community exchange.
District 7 has played a special role in our community's development. Previous generations of Italian immigrants were able to build full lives through home ownership and community networks. Today, new generations of immigrants are enriching our neighborhoods and continuing that tradition. I seek to bridge generations and neighborhoods so that together, we can continue to improve the safety and vitality of our district and our city.
I love living in Framingham and walking around my neighborhood. (Yes, we'll talk more about the traffic.) In this campaign, I will engage residents in respectful, productive conversations and interactions so that together we can build a community that benefits all our inhabitants. As a councilor, I will work to increase collaboration within the council and work to meet the community's evolving needs.
Our downtown district is full of potential and I look forward to working alongside leadership from neighboring Districts, the administration, boards and commissions, as well as local community partners in this area to develop a well-rounded, balanced approach to growth and address issues of concern. We must continue to stabilize and grow the economic engine of this central business district. I will work to dialogue with District 7 residents on a regular basis and establish lines of communication that work both ways, in multiple languages.
The City Council serves as a link between the citizens of Framingham and their municipal government. Communication with constituents is key. It's time to put the City of Framingham back on the map as a vibrant and dynamic metrowest city to live and work.
I look forward to a time when every City Council and School Committee race is contested because so many people are engaged in working to build a positive future for our city. I am excited that there are currently so many people interested in getting involved in District 7 and look forward to meeting more area residents!
