The Board of Selectman is the only body which can place an
override request on the ballot.
My first question was to find out which board members voted to place the last override request on the ballot. The four members present (A. Ginger Esty was not present) became very defensive and they would not respond. Things went downhill after that. I brought up the issue of a timetable for the disposition of town owned exempt properties that were under review for sale. There is no timetable for their sale. Not one has been sold to date. The Selectman appeared to not know about the list of properties. These people must either be as sharp as a sack of flour or simply did not want to deal with this issue in a public forum. To say that John M. Kahn was not aware of the existence of this list after being on the board for 5 years is incredible. Perhaps, I'm giving these people too much credit. None of them wanted to answer any questions at this point. They are under the illusion that public participation does not involve asking hard questions and the participant must share their ideaology. I also brought up the issue of liability for the fire department's chop shop. The taxpayer becomes liable if the town insurance does not cover it. It seems fair that our fire chief, Michael Smith pay the tab for not having a procedure in place to mark these cars with a bright red X mark. The paint can would cost $3.00. |
