Spilka wrong to support in-state tuition for illegal aliens Thursday, July 15, 2004

I am writing this letter today to express my outrage at recent comments made by State Representative and candidate for state senate, Karen Spilka.  She stated she hopes the House will override the veto and give in-state tuition to illegal aliens.  This proposal would increase our taxes in order to make up for the millions of dollars in lost tuition to higher education, whose budgets have been increasingly cut over the years.  It would not only cost our colleges the price of giving discounted rates to thousands of illegal aliens, but it would also trigger a federal law that requires we give in-state tuition rates to all United States residents, thereby costing the state an estimated $90 million dollars in tuition from out-of-state students.  Our colleges and universities, and our taxpayers, can't afford that.

She apparently considers subsidizing illegal aliens more important than our own children's needs.  We don't get our fair share of chapter 70 funding, because there's not enough funding.  We need a moratorium on charter schools because there's not enough funding.  Parents are paying out of pocket for busing and athletics and other after school programs because there's not enough funding.  But apparently what money is available, she believes should be given to illegal aliens.

Legislating is about priorities, and putting some programs above others.  Her priorities are pandering for votes, and winning her primary, rather than serving the needs of her constituents.

Spilka is playing politics with the issue, as she faces a Democratic primary in her run for senate, but she will turn-off many moderate and conservative Democrats.  I call on all the candidates for office to make their positions known on this issue.  I will keep her priorities in mind when I vote in the Democratic primary.  Any candidate of any party who would be willing to put illegal aliens above our own citizens deserves to lose his or her election on this issue alone.  I would never judge a candidate on one issue alone, but in this case, it has a national impact of billions of dollars.  This nation cannot afford such a fiasco.
