Framingham Public Schools Distribute More Than 7,000 Chromebooks To Students September 18, 2020 editor Spread the love

FRAMINGHAM - During the month of September, families were asked to come to their child's school to pick up a Chromebook, school supplies, and in some cases literature books or text books.

Framingham Public Schools distributed 7,398 Chromebooks to start the school year.

There were 3,545 Chromebooks distributed at the elementary level.

Almost 2,000 Chomebooks distributed between the three middle schools - 1980 Chromebooks to be exact.

And at the high school, 1,873 Chromebooks were distributed. High school students had the option to use their own device, if they chose.

Even with not every high school student taking a district-issued Chromebooks, there were traffic jams at the pick on Monday for hours on both ends of A Street.

The public school system also distributed 265 hot spots to families, who did not have Internet service.

And yesterday, September 17, Framingham Superintendent of Schools Bob Tremblay and Assistant Superintendent of Schools Joseph Corazzini distributed Chromebooks to about 50 families, who were unable to pick up their Chromebooks during the day time and evening distribution times.

The first day of school was Wednesday, September 16.

FRAMINGHAM - Framingham Public Schools Technology Director Ann Mariano told the Framingham School Committee Wednesday night, May 6, the district has distributed more than 3, 200 Chromebooks and almost 350 "hot spots" to families.

Mariano said the public school district has either distributed personally or mailed 3,239 Chromebooks since students were last physically in their classrooms on March 11.

That is about 35% of the 9,088 students enrolled in the school district or about one out of every 3 students.

And for families who have not been able to get Internet through Comcast, the district has distributed 342 T-Mobile hot spots, and anticipates delivering about 400 hotspots in total.

Originally, the district had a curbside drive-thru pick up at several schools in late March, and distributed 2,068 Chromebooks in a weekend.

At that time, the district was providing a Chromebook to each family in need.

Since then, the district is now providing a Chromebook to any student in need. So if a family with three students needed a Chromebook, three were distributed.

The district has been mailing Chromebooks since late March, using UPS.

The decision was made to ship to avoid person to person contact, explained Mariano to the School Committee.

Governor Charlie Baker has closed physically schools through the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Framingham Public Schools began remote learning the first week in April, under guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and secondary Education.

If schools were to stay remote for the fall, Mariano said the district has enough Chromebooks for every students in the district.

Editor's Note: The 9,088 student number is based on the October 1, 2019 enrollment number Framingham Public schools submitted to the state by law

If the schools do not actually check to see that a student live at a particular address, that address can be used for a student bus pickup even if the student lives in another city.

In all, 2250 were distributed properly and 480 got preferential treatment.
Will learning outcomes be better for the students that don't have to share?
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

When we asked our readers if they got what they needed, we got mixed responses.

One reader wrote: "We have 4 children, and was only allowed 1 Chromebook. I asked them how all 4 were supposed to share with 2 in high school, 1 middle and 1 in elementary, but wasn't given an answer."

Another reader told us: "Yes I got only one they have to share it. One in middle and one in elementary school."

Another reader responded with: "I got one per child."

Officially, these Chromebooks are loaners, and per the School Department announcement it was supposed to be one per household.
