We all make personal decisions on liability concerning our health
and other matters. Currently, I see two ways that the town is
opening itself to liability issues.

| Fire Fighters and Smoking |

| If a firefighter is a smoker and (s)he becomes disabled due
to a lung related disease such as emphysema or cancer, or
heart disease, (s)he can claim disability based on the nature
of their job, when it might really come from their choice of
smoking.
Firefighters should be in good physical shape in order to perform their duties and smoking limits their effectiveness in their work. If smoking can be banned from restaurants, it should be banned amongst firefighters. There are many laws that make it illegal for me in ingest assorted substances, thus there is no reason to not have a law to prevent firefighters from smoking. The town would not hire
Let's reduce the ambiguity in disability claims by requiring the Town of Framingham to not hire a firefighter who smokes and not allow our firefighters to smoke. This will reduce the taxpayer's cost in disability claims. |
| Sports Utility Vehicles as Town vehicles |
| Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) are well known to have much higher
rates of rollovers. Having ignored this trivia, the Town of
Framingham has chosen to utilize SUVs as town vehicles.
Consider the scenario where a town official is killed or disabled while driving an SUV. Given that the town knows its a more unstable vehicle, his wife sues the town for knowingly endangering her husband's livelihood by providing him with an SUV. Who pays the bill? The taxpayer. The town should consider vehicles other than SUVs. |
| Houses on McLaughlin Street |
| Thanks to some town officials, we could foot the bill on water damage done to these houses on McLaughlin Street. This article says that this issue will most likely end up in court. |
